About
Effective school library programs and professionally trained teacher librarians play an essential role in the instructional program of each school and student achievement.
Welcome to the Iowa School Library Lesson Repository!
Strong school librarians serve as both teachers and librarians. The design and execution of strong library lessons makes a difference in YOUR school. Iowa Administrative Code 281-12.3(10) requires each school district in Iowa employ a qualified teacher librarian and have in place an articulated, sequential K–12 library program. What knowledge and skills do students begin developing in kindergarten that will continue to grow and deepen throughout their educational journey?
High-quality library lesson with clear learning outcomes are essential to student success. They ensure that instruction in the school library is not an add‑on, but a purposeful, measurable, and integral part of teaching and learning across disciplines. The certified, licensed, school librarian is a content area specialist who can support students in an interdisciplinary way.
When lessons are grounded in inquiry, aligned to standards, and built around authentic outcomes, students learn:
*how to ask questions
*evaluate information
*read deeply
*navigate digital environments responsibly
*apply their learning in meaningful ways.
These skills are transferable and enduring.
Clear outcomes also matter for educators. They make collaboration more intentional, support instructional coherence, and provide evidence of impact. When library lessons articulate what students will know and be able to do, educators can better align instruction with classroom goals, Iowa’s K–12 expectations, and school improvement priorities.
This collection of lessons is designed to support:
A strong reading life
Inquiry and research skills
Information and digital literacy
Ethical and safe participation
